It is easy to let the times and the advancement of technology create a sense of hopelessness about the future. With each moment, it feels like time is ticking away. And, clearly, we are all feeling it. But when we look to history, we realize that over the last 100 years we have adapted and grown. I believe we will continue to evolve, despite the challenges. Building capacity, moving your life forward, and finding peace within yourself is the single best plan you can have. I like to get curious and explore different ways to gain knowledge because fundamentally, I believe knowledge is power. When we do this, we open our minds to possibilities. Thanks for a great reflective piece, Mick, and I love the new picture.

100%! The good news is that we’re very adaptable, and we will continue to do so.

I also agree with the knowledge is power. Though over time I am learning the hard lesson that applied knowledge is the best type of knowledge.

Curious to know what are some topics you’re exploring now?? My mind is racing across too many topics so I’ve been doing my best to keep it to minimum haha.

Thank you for reading and the compliment! Glad you enjoyed this piece 🫶

So many topics, Mick. Mostly life-related. Finding your true self, asking how you are judging yourself and why. Looking inwardly to focus on your own gifts. So much, but like you, keeping an open mind but not allowing the topics to run away with themselves.

Lovely topics! There's so much exciting stuff when we explore our inner self. I've been reading The Power of your subconscious mind by Dr Joseph Murphy. If you haven't already, I'd highly recommend. Really cool stuff! I think understanding the subconsciousness really makes the experience of getting to know oneself so fascinating.

"Besides, modern times have exposed it’s not the knowledge that’s the missing equation, but the not taken action." I've been thinking a lot recently about how traditionally smart people don't automatically "make it" in the ways that they want, and I think that's because of a tendency to live internally instead of externally. I love your note on capacity and nuance; I'm curious how you build capacity when that paralysis kicks in?

DAMN! I love how you articulated that ‘live internally instead of externally’. And I think you hit the head on the nail (I think that’s the saying). I found this to be absolutely true. The smarter someone is the more they’ll think and internalise everything. They will think of ALL the possible ways of something to go south. The innate negativity bias doesn’t help either…

Thanks! I have been exploring the idea of nuance in a lot of ideas as they seem to always linger in the air.

Great question! I like to remind myself something along the lines of: “Will I need this task done in the future?” or “Will the task I’m putting to the side help me accomplish the bigger goal?” Interestingly enough, there are moments (usually once every few months) where I just need myself to be paralysed. Just sit there in the confusion, paralysis. I usually drop everything and just lie on a floor. Quite a lot of clarity comes in when I do that.

How about yourself? What techniques/strategies do you rely on during those moments?

Thanks for reading 🫶

Okay, I am going to need to try the lying on the floor thing. Sounds nice.

For me, I also ask, "How is this serving the bigger purpose?" Keeping a bigger perspective always helps.

I also try to remain grateful, because most of the time my paralysis comes from seeing other people in positions I'd like to be in without knowing the steps towards achieving the same goal. Gratefulness and contentment level my playing field because they remind me that they can't be sold or earned; they're perspectives to adopt. That usually sparks action and creativity again.

Highly recommend! It's quite interesting what the mind does once you just let it be.

Love that question! Looking outside ourselves brings so much fulfilment and some sense of ease.

This reminded me of what Kieran Drew said (he's on substack) - Gratitude as baseline. In this philosophy, because you're grateful for everything you have, everything around you, everyONE around you, things are that much better. And I like how you use that to fight against that paralysis.

Let's keep at it Faith! Let's keep enjoying this lovely gift of life!!!

Leaving time out of your day to link it back to building your own life and assets should be more normalised. Time is up to us to spend wisely!

Mick's avatar

It definitely should!! As with time they are taking away our ability to own stuff, normalising building your own assets and building one’s own life should be THE priority.

I love the emphasis of ‘is up to us’. I love that the responsibility is on us. Makes the whole experience so much more exciting!
